September Birchbox – “Heritage”

I wasn’t expecting my September Birchbox until Monday, so when I saw it was out for delivery today I was super excited. I actually received a few packages I wasn’t expecting today. No PopSugar still (mine are still days away and I’m done stalking them – for now), but lots of good boxes did arrive today so I was happy abut that!

The Box

Birchbox ships via UPS Mail Innovations. It took maybe 6 days to arrive this month? They ship in waves and I believe that they still say that all boxes will be shipped by the 20th of the month (can someone confirm this?). Sometimes I’m in an early wave, sometimes not.

The Box in the Box

I received Box #22 (*) this month, which IMO wasn’t one of the amazing boxes, but also wasn’t a “punishment” box (that’s what MUT calls some BB’s) either.  To find out what box # you got, go into your account and click on “Box” and then “Women’s Box”.  Scroll down to the “Box History” section and then click on “September 2013”.  The last number in your URL is your box number (mine says “bb22” – meaning I have Box #22).  I explained how to review products for poits last month, so if you missed that, check it out here.

First Look

I was more excited by my first look than I thought I would be.  Sadly I wasn’t one of the 100 subscribers this month who won the 1000 Birchbox points (I hope one of you won though!), but it was still a good first look.

The Information Card

The September Birchbox theme was “Heritage” and is all about the stories and history behind the brand and the products.  This month is also their 3rd Anniversary.  Does anyone know if any subscription boxess have been out longer than BB?  I *think” BB might be the oldest, but you never know.

Here’s what my box included:

~jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss in Riveria ($8): I love getting lip glosses in boxes and this is a perfect little gloss.  I’ve tried a few jouer products in various subscriptions, including a gloss in FFF and really liked it.  This is a fabulous color (it’s not as deep as the gloss / stain I received last month) and the size is just too cute.

~Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive ($4.88): I received this same exact sample in my Fall Yuzen box and am thrilled to get more!  Does Juice Beauty have any stand alone retail stores?  Because I would LOVE to go visit one someday.  They have such great stuff.

~Ruffian Nail Laquer (Fox Hunt) ($10): Of all the Ruffian nail polishes BB sent this month, this orange (or “fox”) was the one I most wanted to get.  I didn’t know this, but Ruffian is a high-end fashion label and this polish, a BB exclusive,  is their first “lacquer collection”.  And aren’t the bottles cute??

~Serge Normant Meta Luxe Hair Spray ($6.67): Thanks to my subscription boxes, I have not had to buy hair spray in ages.  I sprayed this right away to test it out and really liked it.  It comes out in bursts and didn’t leave my hair all sticky or crunchy.  I wouldn’t buy a $25 can of it, but I do like it.

~Borracha Wine Wipes ($1.06): Well I have never heard of such a thing. They are basically baby wipes for your teeth.  Let me tell you, when I drink enough wine to stain my teeth, I don’t even notice that they are stained ;).

All totaled my September Birchbox had a value of $30.61.  Including the points I get for reviewing the products (which is equal to $5) and the points I got for purchasing the box (**) (which is equal to $1), the box had a real total value of $36.61.  This wasn’t my favorite favorite BB from the past few months, but I totally think my streak of great Birchboxes continues!

I am not a huge fan of birchbox, I think its useful for product discovery, and trying things I usually wouldn’t. Birch points are a nice touch, I posted all my thoughts here: http://subscriptionboxavenue.com/birchbox

I love ‘punishment box.’ I think that’s what I’m getting. Any idea what the ‘good’ and ‘punishment’ boxes were. Feeling too lazy to search MT. I’m annoyed with bb anyway, I got my bb on August 22(!!) and when I went to review my products it wouldn’t work & now they say its too late (I sent an email 3 days ago & they only responded today, usually the are right on it!).

  3. Elizabeth

I got box 16 and loved it. It had the same lip gloss, nail polish and hair spray. I thought I’d hate the gloss after last month but I loved it.

  4. Deena

I received the same polish and LOVE it. I finally got a Benefit product, so it was a great box.

Juice beauty is sold @ ULTA stores I believe. Not sure if they have them near you, but they are pretty popular around here.

  6. Catherine

I got box #17. Love it! And I love the Ruffian polish so much that I went and bought the crowdsourced collection. I thought the Hedgefund polish was hideous in the photo but I LOVE it on my hands.

  7. Lauren

That’s a good box! I hope I get nail polish too. All my subs and Zulily packages have been delayed because of these awful floods!

  8. Bonnie

I received the facial peel and fox hunt Ruffian polish. It is a great color. I also received the shampoo and conditioner which I will likely save for traveling. Oh I also received the rinse free laundry soak.

I did not win the 1000 points, if I had I would have ordered the sea salt spray. I also want the Whish wipes, what were they called? I wouldn’t mind the wine wipes either. I love things I can stash in my purse and my a rough day better.

I got box #7 although this is only my second box…I have not been thrilled with either one. I got the “fox” nail polish, yes to blueberry wipes, moisturizer, cc cream and lip gloss. The polish leaked a little in the box. Seems to be my luck lately….(glossy box first box I got last month the shadow complelety broke and everywhere). Got my first IPSY yesterday loved it! Althought I would have loved a different color of eye shadow…I got yellow?

Juice beauty is also sold at Ulta!

  11. Morgan

They said the wait is 4-6 weeks. I waited 1 week and got an email to join:)

  12. Susan

I got box 23. The only thing that was the same was the nail polish. I also got the Airelle intense repair, Bon genre perfume, Davines sea salt spray, and Racinne eye serum. The only complaint I have is with the seal salt spray. It leaked a little in the box, not enough to ruin anything, but still. Also, it seems like I’ve gotten a sea salt spray in almost every box this summer, so am kind of over it. For a September box, going into Autumn, that’s not an item I think would be included. I’m excited to try everything else, especially the nail polish.

  13. Karen O

I got box #17, and I’m more happy than ‘eh’ this time. No foil packets! Nipple balm for my lips was a fail, I had enough of that when my daughter was nursing. But I got an eye pencil last months, and my boxes then to go up and down.

I think BB is the oldest monthly. I subscribed right when I heard of their beta (subscriber #154), and it really was not until the following summer I really noticed more box options.

    1. Lisa Y

Hi Karen – I was curious about how you heard of Birchbox’s beta when they first launched? I’ve read interview transcripts saying they reached 200 customers and over 3,000 people on the beta waitlist through an initial email to just 40 friends, which seems quite astounding if that’s all the marketing they did.

  14. Lauren

    Hi

I’m a birchbox subscriber. I got the nail polish in a green shade ( not a color I would normally wear but Im trying it), a hair bun tool, a hand cream by caudline, a perfume sample from BCBG and eyeshadow (rock legend)

  15. Mary

I received “Fox Hunt” and absolutely loved it. At work I’m not allowed to wear nail polish so I’ve never invested in colors, but I this is awesome. I just kept looking at my hands like a little kid. Unfortunately the second time I went to apply it the brush came loose in the bottle. I could have cried. I emailed Birch box and was given 100 points as they did not have that color left to send out. They have been great anytime I have a problem. I’ve ordered my husband a birch box and in return he sent me the new deluxe size. I guess we’re major Birchboxers.

I was only on the wait list to join for maybe 4-5 days! I just joined tonight! 🙂
