RawSpiceBar November 2015 Subscription Box

RawSpiceBar, who kindly sent me this package to review, sends 3-4 hand-picked, small batch, freshly ground spice blends with each monthly box. Each of the blends weigh about 0.5 ounces, which allows you to create a single dish feeding approximately 12-14 people. You will also receive kitchen-tested, detailed recipes and ideas for each spice blend you receive as well as fun gifts and stories about the history and origins of each blend every month.

First Look / The Information Card

The October 2015 RawSpiceBar featured “The Malaysian Spice Box” and included the following items:

~Malaysian Laska Spices: This is a blend of coriander and turmeric combined with the citrusy flavor or lemongrass and earthy notes of galangal.  RawSpiceBar suggests using this to make a traditional Malaysian Laksa which sounds quite good.  Although I do think I will use green beans instead of cabbage.

~Kaffir Lime Blend: Kaffir Lime Blend is a blend of kaffir lime powder, turmeric, palm sugar and red chiles.  It’s suggested on ice-cream (I don’t know about that), roasted nuts, as a salad dressing or on a bowl of noodles. The included recipe is for a Kaffir Lime Salad .  It has cabbage, which I am so not a fan of, so I may do a little substituting on this one as well.

~Sambal Oelek: Sambal Oelek is a spicy hot blend of fresh ground chile peppers, cayenne pepper, palm sugar and paprika.  I believe the recipe included is for a dipping sauce? The description alone has my scared, but B will happily try it!

RawSpiceBar’s product quality was not what I had expected (I had heard great reviews) and the individual spice packets contained less than what was promised on the label (I individually weighed each packet – even if you include the weight of the mini brown envelope, the product delivered was less than what was promised).

I canceled after 1 month – I think, it was a waste of $6 for less than 3 spoons of spice!
