Kiwi Crate October 2015 Subscription Box Review – “Treasure Hunt”

Kiwi Crate boxes are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L and I have been doing the projects together together for ages, but he’s close to outgrowing it (he’s 7). WB (he’s 3) and I were bored the other day, so we decided to work on this one together.

The Box

Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and generally takes about a week to arrive. All of my Kiwi Crate boxes (Kiwi Crate, Koala Crate and Doodle Crate) arrived together in one large box this month, as they have been lately.

First Look

I had no idea what the theme was this month, so opening the box was a surprise for WB and I.

The Theme

The October 2015 Kiwi Crate theme was “Treasure Hunt” and included two projects “treasure chest” and “treasure hunt”.  I also want to note that Kiwi Crate now has a different information card format.  Previously they had three different booklets – one for each project and then a separate one for the bonus activities.  They also had the general theme card and the explore! magazine.  Now it’s just the explore! magazine and a giant fold out booklet.

Project #1 – Treasure Chest

Treasure Chest – The Materials

The first project we worked on was “treasure chest”.  It was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved “discovering”, “creating” and “moving – fine”.

Treasure Chest – All Done

Since it was WB and I who worked on this one it was actually high on the grownup involvement scale.  And I mean HIGH. I could not follow the instructions at all.  LOL.  I was lost.  I eventually stopped reading them and found that it was just easier to put together on my own.  I should have waited to for L to get home from school to see what he thought about it.  He probably would have understood them.  But WB and I got it together and put a few treasures in it right away,

The second project in the box was “treasure maps”.  This was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved “communicating”, “creating” and “moving – gross”.

Treasure Maps – All Done!

We made a few maps with the goal of hiding the treasure chest for L to find.  My drawing skills are awful, but I think that L would be able to find the treasure on my map.  Now on WB’s map?  I’m not sure.  LOL!  He used an awful lot of X’s.  He may have been employing some sort of tactic to throw L off.  While we had fun with this I think it would have been neat if they included more stickers (beds, trees, etc.) to help spruce up the maps.

Imagination Maps – The Materials

We haven’t gotten a chance to use the imagination maps yet, but there are four maps of different scenes (ocean, traditional, road and circle) and you can use them to draw your own special world.

explore!

As usual, the explore! magazine includes puzzles, games, recipes, experiments, stories and additional activities relating to the theme.
