Yay! My October 2014 Escape Monthly Box is here! I was been anxiously awaiting this one since I saw the destination last month and was excited when it was out for delivery today.

If you aren’t familiar with them, Escape Monthly, which is $49.95/month, is a monthly vacation in a box. Each month you will discover products from a different location. Products consist off local and destination-inspired foods, relaxation and beauty essentials, and the highest quality products that bring the life of the destination right to you. They also offer an “Escape Mini” ($24.95/month) which contains 4 to 5 luxury, locally-made products and a travel brochure.

The Box

Escape Monthly ships via USPS Priority Mail. They are suppose to ship on the 20th of the month and since they ship via Priority Mail, they should arrive 2-3 days after that. I got my tracking notification for this one on the 20th, but I didn’t start seeing any movement on it until the 23rd.

First Look

Somehow I had yet to see any spoilers on this box.  I looked yesterday and saw some on the Escape Mini, but none for the full-sized one.

The Information Card

The October 2014 Escape Monthly destination was “London” and included the following items:

~Rick Steves London Travel Guide ($8.21): I have never been to London, but it’s for sure on my list of places to go.  They have a few different types of travel guides and I like these Rick Steves ones the best so far.

~Soapsmith 3-Piece London Soap Sampler ($8): This sampler includes 3 soap slices.  They  smell good, but are in the small side, so they will end up in a soap sack.

~Westminster Caddy of English Breakfast Tea ($8): I am not a fan of tea, but I expected that this box to include tea, so it’s not a huge surprise.  I’ll give this to B or to my cousin to enjoy. I love the little tin it’s in though!

~Hill Custard Creams ($3): These are delicious!  We all tried them today and love them.  WB couldn’t get enough!

~Rush Hour Vibrant Dry Body Oil ($6.74): Luckily these both arrived sealed in individual zip lock bags because one of mine leaked.  That would have been quite the mess!  I’ve never tried this brand before so I am excited to try it and I will e-mail Escape Monthly and see if they will replace my leaky one.

~Walkers Nonsuch English Creamy Toffees ($4.50): These are also very good.  I always like when they give us smaller individual pieces of candy so you don’t feel like you have to eat them all at once or they go to waste.

~London Diecast Taxi ($8): If I didn’t have kids I probably wouldn’t be as excited about this as I am. WB claimed it immediately and hasn’t let it out of his site yet.  I believe some subscribers received a red double decker bus instead of the taxi and I am going to try and trade for that one too.

~Bonus: Corkers Natural British Crunch ($3): I think Sausage and Mustard chips sound pretty gross, but B doesn’t so these are all his!  And watch, I will probably be surprised and love them.

All totaled I came up with a value of $49.45 for the October 2014 Escape Monthly box.  I used current online prices for my values while Escape Monthly probably used retail prices in their calculation.  I get the 20% discount and pay about $40/month so it was over the cost I paid for the box, however, I am not overly thrilled with this month.  I feel like they could have done so much with London (and didn’t) and would have loved to see that full-size Organic Hand Lotion from Orico that was advertised as a bonus for new subscribers in my box!

What do you think of Escape Monthly this month?  If you are interested in subscribing or just want to learn more, click here.  You can use the code “MYESCAPE” to score 20% off not only your first box, but all your other boxes for the life of your subscription.  That gets you a discount of $10/month on the regular box which is awesome (it doesn’t look like the code works on the Escape Mini)!  The November destination is “Hawaii” which I am hoping I like more than these last few months boxes or I will probably end up switching to the “Mini” box and see how I like that one for a bit!

Sadly I think this company needs a new curator. They could do so much each month that they don’t do. Give me the job lol. I do love that tin the tea came in though!

    1. Ashley

I agree, Kate. Seems like boxes have been really cheap and junky lately.

I rode in a taxi like that twice in London last year with some friends. It was so fun!!! The first time was because we had stayed out too late and the subway was closed and the second time we did it on our last day because we had enjoyed it so much the first time!!!

  3. Amber Lang

I got my box today too. I think the value is horrible I paid 50 dollars for this. This is the second month I am disappointed. They need to hire someone to put these boxes together . They could do such a better job . If you are reading this. Hire someone new. This could be a great box. PLus you need to either charge less or increase the value

I tried last month’s box and cancelled. It was very disappointing. I’m glad I did–you can find most of this stuff at Cost Plus World Market. This sub does not seem very well curated, and seems a poor value for the price. I think they need to improve, or they will soon be added to the list of boxes that are no longer in business.

  5. Kayla

Thanks for the review! This is my first Escape Monthly box and it still has not arrived, although I was told it would be here by middle to end of this past week -.- I think the box is just ok… I am a lot happier knowing I am getting the full sized lotion that was a welcome offer for new subscribers. Hawaii is supposed to be their “highest value” Escape yet and I’m wondering if they are just going to repeat their previous Hawaii box? I’ll probably stick around for another month or two but I do agree that they need to improve!

  6. Jenn

I have to agree with the statement about World Market. I think of the cute tins I could have there. Shocked about the blatant price inflating on book. They said it was an error but I am skeptical. When I was trying to cancel they offered 15% more off so I kept it. They promised about a 70-80 value. I don’t feel this was even vlose. Very sad. While better than Puerto Rico I’m done with this one.

    1. Jennifer

No, that wasn’t a $70-$80 value. Maybe if you use retail prices, but if you can find something for less, you aren’t going to pay more!

This was my first month with Escape Monthly because I’ve been to London & absolutely loved it. I haven’t gotten my box yet, but looks like I’m not waiting for much. I saw all of this stuff in tourist shops & even bought a tin of tea like that. I’m not impressed at all. I just emailed them to cancel, hopefully they cancel it before I’m billed for the Hawaii box.

    1. Jennifer

Let me know how canceling goes! I have heard people say it’s difficult and would love to hear your experience!

      1. Hannah

Canceling was simple! I emailed them asking to cancel before they billed me. They replied less than 24 hours later & asked why I wanted to cancel. I told them & they responded within minutes apologizing, offered me 10% off, and told me that they had canceled my subscription, that I would not be billed for the next box, & that they hoped that I would subscribe again in the future.
I just got my box a few minutes ago & am 100% glad I canceled. I hope they create good boxes again in the future because I love the concept.

I cancelled this sub the other day — before I even got the box. While I like the concept of it and like many of the individual items, I can think of much better ways to spend my $50 (or $40, whatever) each month.

Once I got my box, I felt satisfied in knowing I made the right decision. Once again, I liked the items, but I didn’t feel wowed by it. I enjoyed the PR box because I’ve never been there and it felt like a fun mini-vacation. However, I have been to both Paris and London and (like the other ladies said), feel that I did a much better job of curating my own knick knacks. I’ll watch the reviews & if it ever gets better I’ll think about subscribing again, but in the meantime, I’m letting it go with no regrets.

    1. Jessica G

… also, one of my oils leaked all over as well.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, canceling wasn’t particularly difficult. I sent an e-mail and less than 24 hours later had my confirmation that the subscription was cancelled (trust me, I’m keeping it). They offered me a discount on the next box, but didn’t really hard sell the sub.

    2. Jennifer

You said it well. I don’t dislike the individual items, but as a whole, it’s just not amazing.

  9. HeatherP

I feel like this box has been very disappointing. It seems to be a box of chachkies and meh food. Id like to see more things that are unique to the vacation spot. In addition, the value and curation does not support the price. If they improve i will resubscribe. London especially disappointed me. Could have had so many cool things.

    1. Jennifer

They could have done so much!

  10. Danyelle

I missed the deadline to sub to this month’s box and I’m so glad. I know they constantly offer discounts but I’d be so disappointed to spend $40-$50 on a pack of cookies, a cheap tin of tea and little odds and ends. I hope it gets better, seems like it should be a great box.

    1. Jennifer

The last few boxes just haven’t been great. Hopefully they can come back!

  11. Alicia

I hate to say it but what a horrible box! I remember reading reviews and being wowed and jealous I didn’t sign up to receive a box. So glad I didn’t and just kept reading the reviews! It’s too bad… Hopefully something will change because the idea of this box is great.

    1. Jennifer

There is seriously so much they could do!

  12. Jayne

I think I’ll be crossing this subscription off my wish list. Puerto Rico wasn’t good and London seems even worse.

I’m glad I can see your reviews here so I don’t end up spending money I don’t really need to!

  13. Alecia

I agree with everybody else. London was better than Puerto Rico, but wasn’t as amazing as I hoped. Both of my oils were leaking, but didn’t leak horribly out of their bags. The potato chips were interesting….I could taste the sausage, but not the mustard. I wish that they would give everybody the GWP to make up for the months they’re running late and know the box isn’t that great. Hawaii will probably be my last box especially since I am so pleased with The French Box the past two months.

  14. MJ

I had the same bottle of body oil leak, the one with the metal cap. Looking at the fill lines of mine the metal cap one that leaked has a way higher fill line than the one that didn’t leak. I find that very odd.

  15. Becky

I love the idea for this box, but the value isn’t there. What a shame!

  16. Terri Q

Both of my oils leaked, but I’m not big into body oils so won’t be emailing the company. At least they were both in little bags so the oil didn’t get all over everything. I had really high hopes for this month as London is one of my favorite cities, but was disappointed. I think I could have put together a much better box myself! If Hawaii isn’t amazing, going to cancel. Love the idea of this box, but feel that it’s not living up to its potential.
