Fair Treasure, who kindly sent me this box to review, sends fair trade items such as jewelry, glass wear, pottery and paper goods, to your door each month. Their goal is to make it easier for everyone to explore the very best that Fair Trade products have to offer… and in turn, providing exposure and supporting the communities of people making these treasures.

The Box

FAIR Treasure ships via USPS and, as usual, arrived quite quickly. I am not sure how large of an operation FAIR Treasure is, but I have never once had an issue with a late box, damaged item, etc. No matter if they are a big company or a small one, I think this speaks well of them!

First Look

The first look on this one told me nothing at all!  I couldn’t see or smell anything that gave me any hints about this box.

The August 2014 FAIR Treasure Box theme was “Hold on to Summer” and included the following items to help keep your vibe going through these last weeks of summer:

~Mata Traders Allego Bracelet ($18):  I think bracelets are my favorite piece of jewelry to receive in subscription boxes. They typically always fit and I feel like you can get away with more with a bracelet than you can with a necklace.  Maybe because it’s smaller?  Anyway, I think this is a fun piece and my picture really doesn’t do it justice at all.

~Sana Hastakala Lotus Blossom Candle Set ($21.75):I think that this was perhaps the fanciest candle box I have ever received.  Honestly the box itself could have been the item this month – it’s that pretty.  These candleholders are handmade in Nepal and Sana Hastakala operated as a nonprofit.  Profits from the company’s sales are used for producer development programs, staff welfare and organizational strengthening!

All totaled I came up with a value of $39.75 for the August 2014 FAIR Treasure box. That is about average it seems for FAIR Treasure boxes and is more than the $35/month cost of the box. Plus, if you were to buy these items on your own you would have to take shipping costs into consideration as well!

I wish I could be excited about bracelets in subscription boxes, but my wrists are really tiny, so most bracelets are too big on me! I got that from my mom. Like, I could probably wear a 6-inch bracelet and have it look just right! Note that the rest of me isn’t really tiny, just the wrists!
    Those candles are beautiful though!

Fair Treasure was one of the first boxes I canceled, and it was a good decision. I got tired quickly of their love affair with Mata Traders (multiple broken items) or something like a metal mug with peeling paint. Then I discovered Novica.com for high-quality items from around the world. Now I’m really only buying from American artists and will on my fourth buying trip of the last month in a few days. I love getting things I love and will really want to keep.
