Hatchery Tasting Box, who kindly sent me this box to review, is a monthly subscription box which brings curated, sample-size artisan ingredients and condiments to your doorstep. Each month you will receive 5-6 hand selected artisan ingredients, as well as, exclusive member promotions and discounts.

Hatchery ships via FedEx and generally takes a few days to arrive.  The boxes I receive are review boxes and, I believe, arrive a little later than subscribers boxes.

I totally love the way Hatchery wraps all of the items individually.  It makes it so much more fun to open and probably makes them more secure as well.

The Information Booklet

The June 2014 Hatchery Tasting Box doesn’t have a theme (I don’t believe they ever do), however, every box does come with a fabulous Tasting Guide.  The Tasting Guide includes brand and product information for each of the items in the box along with a online recipe using the sample sizes included in the box.  I think it’s awesome that they not only tell you what everything is and what it would be good with, they go the next step and give you recipes so you don’t have to go hunting for them!  Here is what was inside:

~Empire White Truffle Mayonnaise: OMG love.  We’ve had this in the past and usually eat it on our burgers to fancy them up.  So good.  The information card recommends using the sample size for White Truffle Egg Salad Tartines or Tempura String Beans with White Truffle Mayo (recipes for both are provided on their website).  Both sound good, but I may just stick with the burgers.

~Saucy Sister Virgin Vanilla Bean: Oh man.  I don’t even know what to say about this other than it’s amazing.  The booklet recommends it in Adult Milkshakes and Creme Caramel, but I think I am going to just throw it on some vanilla ice cream and call it good.  If I don’t eat it all with a spoon out of the jar before I get some vanilla ice cream anyway.

~Bill’s Best BBQ Original BBQ Sauce: This is more of a B item.  The recipe suggestions are for BBQ Meatball Sliders and BBQ Peel’N Eat Shrimp.  The BBQ Meatball Sliders sound much more interesting to me so I am going to try to talk him into making that one!

~Diane’s Sweet Heat Mango Habanero Jam: Now this one I am not so sure about!  B might have to make something with this for the guys at work.  The information booklet says it packs a punch and is “the real deal” which has me scared away.  I steer clear of spicy spices.  I mean I even think that “Medium” Salsa is too much!  The recipes for this one are Grilled Chicken and Scallion Kabobs” and “Vietnamese Red Snapper Noodle Bowl”.  I am looking forward to seeing what B does with this.

~Arette Tea Seed Oil: I have never heard of “tea seed” oil!  Tea tree oil yes, but tea seed?  Never.  Anyways, it’s a mild oil and is chocked full of health benefits.  The suggested recipes are Spicy Beef and Bok Choy Stir-Fry and Chicken Paillard with Citrus Salad.  I am am learning towards the chicken one, but we’ll see what B thinks.

~Whole Spice Paella Spice Mix:  Ohh, one of the recipes for this one is Paella Burgers (the other is Spanish Frittata with Asparagus and Manchego) and it sounds amazing.  I like that the recipes they provide aren’t totally crazy and they actually make me want to try them.  I can’t think of a single recipe (well other than the ones with the spicy foods) that I think don’t sound amazing!

I never do a cost breakdown on the Hatchery Tasting Box, but it works out to be about $4 per item which I don’t think is too crazy.  I really think that it’s amazing that they include recipes using the trial sizes that come in the box.  I think it makes Hatchery stand out because sometimes you just don’t know what to do with smaller sized items, no matter how amazing they sound.

I shouldn’t be reading this around mealtime. The mayo and vanilla bean looks delicious.

Love Hatchery Box! And I used every single item this past month and made one of the dishes they recommended for each product. Try the Adult Milkshake. It’s not a shake. You actually pour the mixture over ice. Really good. And don’t be afraid of the jam. I made the Grilled Chicken and Scallion Kabobs and it wasn’t hot at all (simple recipe with great flavor). Love the Tea Seed Oil! One of my best friends works for Arette and she saw my Hatchery boxes and talked her company into getting their products in the boxes! So fun to make something with each product (and we are actually going to buy full sizes of several).

I still think you should just move to Michigan and I can just try all the fabulous things you make…..

Total waste of money! My daughter got me a 6 month subscription for Christmas for $150. The amounts are TINY and they only come with 1 recipe per ingredient…if the recipe doesn’t appeal to you, well then, too bad. Also, the recipes are invariably incorrect! For ex: “Huevos Rancheros with COTIJA CHEESE, Avocado, and Cilantro” doesn’t call for ANY cheese. Also “Morrocan-Style Chicken with Apricots and Olives” calls for 1/2 cup of flat-leaf parsley, plus more for garnish, plus 1/2 cup fresh cilantro – but doesn’t say what to do with them – not that these things can’t be figured out, but REALLY?!! Also that same recipe call for 3 TBSP of Far East Spain Blend included in the box – but they only included about 1 TBSP of the spice! Not enough to even try the ONE recipe included!!

    WARNING ABOUT HATCHERY SUBSCRIPTION BOX!

THIS COMPANY HAS TAKEN MY MONEY WITHOUT SENDING PRODUCT AND WITHOUT RESPONDING TO ANY PHONE CALLS OR MESSAGES. FURTHER, I CANNOT UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THEIR SERVICE WITHOUT THEM CALLING ME BACK TO “FINALIZE” MY CANCELATION. GUESS WHAT THEY WILL NOT CALL ME BACK! IT IS NOT JUST ME, BUT PLENTY OF OTHERS HAVING THIS ISSUE AND THEY HAVE BEEN DELETING POSTS SO ANY NEW SUBSCRIBERS WILL NOT HAVE ANY WARNING!!

This was a wonderful subscription at first, then there were delays, and I wasn’t too upset because there was adequate communication. This time, however, it has been radio silence, and deleting and blocking of comments… nice…
