Wow. I wasn’t expecting it at all, but my June 2014 Julep Maven box arrived today! I was super excited to see it though because I had been in a bit of subscription box drought lately.

If you aren’t familiar, Julep is a monthly nail polish subscription service.  They have recently switched a few things up and are now offering a “My Maven” box for $24.99/month which contains $40+ worth of product and polish or “Maven Luxe” for $39.99/month which contains $60+ of prestige products.  Both boxes are fully customizable and you have the option to switch between tiers.  Subscribers prior to 4/29/14 are grandfathered in at the $19.99/month rate, however, they will need to upgrade if they want to customize their boxes.  If you opt for a prepaid subscription of 3-months, you can also get the $19.99/rate which is fully customizable!

The Box

My Julep box this month shipped via USPS Priority Mail.  Last month’s box shipped via USPS First Class Mail, so I don’t know why it changed this month. I did also get some add-ons, so maybe that was why?

First Look

I had zero idea what option I had selected for this month, but as I was opening up the box it all came back to me!

The Information Card

The June 2014 Julep Maven theme was “The Three Wishes Collection”.  I haven’t made the switch to the fully customized box yet (I was grandfathered in at the $19.99 rate and don’t want to switch to the $24.99 rate just yet) so I had to select from the “preset” box options.  I opted for “Classic With A Twist” this month which included the following items:

~Bergen (Classic With A Twist) ($14 / $11.20):  Bergen is a hazy blue-grey shimmer.  It’s not my favorite color ever, but I didn’t have anything like it.  At least I don’t think I do.  I still haven’t swatched all my Julep lids like I want too so I am going by memory.

~Ariana (Classic With A Twist) ($14 / $11.20): Ariana is an enchanted berry iridescent chrome and is the complete reason I picked this box. It’s gorgeous. Even more so in person than I thought it would be. Had I done the customize option I would have went for Ariana and Jennine, which is a stunning “borealis blue stardust (matte glitter)”. I ended up picking that one up as an add-on, however, now that I think about it I should have just done the customize upgrade!

~Julep Oxygen Smoothing Base Coat ($18 /$14.40): I do not use a base coat like I should and I pay the price because I end up with stained nails which I then like to whine about. I plan to try this with the last Julep (some do, some don’t) polish I used that stained my nails (it was a dark turquoise color)! And I will report back on the results.

All totaled I came up with a value of $36.80 for the June 2014 Julep Maven “Classic with a Twist” box!  I don’t think this was my most favorite ever collection, but I got two solid colors and a gorgeous add-on, so I am happy!  I also opted for one of the Mystery Grab Bags and received four polishes (Marjorie, Teri, Anisa & Veronica), Julep Lip Gloss (Fearless) and Kajal Eye Glider (Carbon Black / Brown Shimmer).  I cannot for the life of me recall what the price was on the Mystery Bag, but I don’t think it was too expensive (maybe $19.99?), and I thought it was a nice little haul!  ETA: Two of the polishes I thought were part of the Mystery Bag might be from the gift Julep offered to Maven’s in June for taking 3 add-ons with our box.

Did you get Julep this month?  What collection did you get? As always, if you are interested in subscribing to Julep, click here and use the coupon code “FREEBOX” to get your first box for $4.99 (you pay only the shipping) or it will take $19.99 off a 3-month subscription, which makes your first box totally free (a 3-month prepaid subscription works out to $19.99/month).

Can you tell me how long Julep polish usually lasts? I tried a free box and cancelled and am thinking of subscribing again as I recently used an OPI polish that started chipping after barely 2 days.

    1. Jennifer

It depends! It lasts for ages on my toes and I can usually get a few days out of it on my finger nails. Longer if I use a top coat!

  2. Angie

I customized my box and I got Ariana and Jennine. I prepaid for 3 months because I always take my box. I use the freedom polymer topcoat and generally get at least 5 chip free days with my julep polishes and sometimes more.

You are good! I am so rough on my nails.

I got the same box but added a few add ons because it said if you did three add ons that you’d get a special surprise. It was three pixie sticks! LOL. Live and learn I guess but I won’t do that again! I love Bergen though! It’s like blue suede shoes. I also like how the base coat is matte and I’m wondering if I can use it as a mattefying top coat; I’ll have to try it.

    1. Jennifer

Ohhhhhh, it’s all coming back to me know! Those were the special surprise? That’s why I got those add-ons! I was wondering when I opened it what I was thinking. I got the oxygen top coat as my other add-on.

      1. Jennifer

Hmm, maybe two of the four polishes that came in my mystery pack were my the two free ones?? So confusing!

  4. Amanda

I used a greenish Julep nail polish (without a base coat) and it stained my nails. 🙁 What do you do to fix it? It looks like I colored my nails with a highlighter and it’s driving me crazy!

    1. Jennifer

I think I waited it out? But I swear I remember reading something about lemon juice???

I got Ariana and Natalia, along with the Oxygen Base Coat. I used the Base Coat last night. I like the finish — it’s almost like a matte, cloudy finish that dries so fast. However, I think it smells kind of weird? It has a strong scent to it to me. I LOVE Natalia — it’s the copper one. It looks so-so-so-so pretty and goes on so well. I almost got Bergen but swapped last minute for Natalia.

Last night was also my first try with the Plie Wand. Now, it could be because I was using a copper/neutral-ish color, but I was really impressed by it. I’ll have to see how I feel when I use a darker color. I also didn’t have any problem getting the caps off.

You’re so lucky that you got Veronica! That’s a beautiful color. I’m excited to be getting my Memorial Day Mystery Boxes this week (I think).

    1. Jennifer

I think mine are coming this week too! Can’t wait to see what I get!

I got the It Girl collection which came in the colors of Savoy,Phia and Jannine. I added Pheobe and got the pixi stix too. So I would think the polishes were your probably your surprise.

    1. Jennifer

That makes sense. I forgot all about the surprise until someone mentioned it!

  7. Shannon

I got mine yesterday too. I changed to the customize-able “My Maven” subscription. I kept the Bombshell nail colors, but removed the base coat. (I had just got a bottle of the Oxygen Nail Treatment 2 weeks before). I replaced it with a Clean Slate polish remover kit. Then added 3 add-ons. I also got Veronica & Marjorie in my box & some Pixie Stix. I thought maybe Julep had made a mistake in sending the extra colors. I forgot about the free gift too until you mentioned it!

    1. Jennifer

I totally forgot until someone else mentioned it! I thought that I just got a great mystery pack!

  8. cheryl

i got marjorie and veronica + 3 pixie stix as the free gift for taking 3 add-ons.

they weren’t colours I would have normally purchased, but they are fun to own when free.. 😉

    1. Jennifer

      I agree!!

  9. Hilda

I got my welcome box a few weeks ago and was excited enough to continue my subscription. Of course today I get an email to preview my July box and now I’m hooked and obsessing over what to pick. Is the Plie wand worth getting as a add-on? I’m not too bad painting my own nails but it’s nothing close to professional. I’d love to know your opinion on it since you’ve had it for a few months.

    1. Jennifer

Is the wand a big discount on the add-on? It’s totally worth getting!

      1. Hilda

It’s $12.99. I guess I should go for it. Thanks.

        1. Jennifer

          Yes, for $12.99 you should!!!
