I was just thinking about FAIRtreasure and wouldn’t you know it, a few minutes later I received an e-mail asking me if I wanted to review their September box!  If you aren’t familiar with FAIRtreasure, their goal is to make it easier for everyone to explore the very best that Fair Trade products have to offer… and in turn, providing exposure and supporting the communities of people making these treasures.

I skipped the picture of the outer box, but FAIRtreasure ships via USPS at the beginning of the month and boxes arrive very quickly.  And, as always, the box smelled wonderful.  They must somehow scent the boxes?  Or the straw (?) they use is scented?  Something!

FAIRtreasure doesn’t have an information card really.  They do individual information cards on the products, so this one just has a little note along with some information on where to find them on social media.  Here’s what this month’s box included:

~Mata Traders Chevron Necklace ($28): I believe Mata Traders has been featured in previous boxes, but they source products from local cooperatives in India and and ensure that artisans receive living wages, work in safe conditions and guarantee that no child labor is involved in the production of their goods.  I wasn’t totally sure about this necklace at first, but then realized it’s chevron and what’s not to like?

~Indika Imports Elephant Gift Cards ($4): I love receiving paper goods in boxes and these cards totally fit that description.  Indika Imports partners with artisan organizations to bring employment to artisans and to keep traditional skills alive.  I plan to use these not as gift cards / tags, but as little note cards when I sent out blog prizes / swaps / books!

~Acacia Creations Olive Wood Pinch Pot ($15): I had to estimate this price because I couldn’t find it online. Acacia Creations works to improve the skills  and product designs of craftsmen and women in Nairobi, which is a means of providing sustainability. I believe that a pinch put is used to hold salt near your cooking area so you can grab a “pinch” when you need it for your mails.  I am not sure that B needs a pinch pot though and if he doesn’t, I will happily determine a use for it!

All totaled I came up with a value of $47 for the August FAIRtreasure box. FAIRtreasure starts at $30/month, so the value is totally there (and could be more or less depending on the true value of the bowl).  And every time I get a box, I feel like I am going on a mini vacation and learning a little about a part of the world and some of the local artisans!
