Taste Trunk is a brand new monthly subscription box offering 5-10 4-6 products, discount coupons, backgrounds on the companies and amazing recipe ideas from one of four themes, including Gourmet, BBQ, Healthy and Sweet. Brands and items are hand selected and trunks are only $34.99/month ($29 + $5.99 shipping) $35/month. I tried the BBQ Trunk last month and decided to switch it up this month and go with the Gourmet one. I really wanted to try the “Sweets” one, but in the interest of getting back on the eating clean wagon, I thought it’d be best not to go that route ;).

The Box

Taste Trunks ships via USPS Priority Mail in a flat rate box. It’s a bit different than last month’s box, but I think this is going to be the standard going forward. It’s got to be expensive to ship these and flat rate is the way to do it.

The Box in the Box

Inside the flat rate box was a smaller box which was the actual Taste Trunk! It was on the heavier side and had the fancy Taste Trunk seal on it.

First Look

Umm, mom, does this packaging look familiar?  I kid you not, we had the EXACT same kind of wallpaper (only it was black and white) in our bathroom growing up.  Except I feel like ours was the old school Sears catalog or something?  Mom?  B (my bother).   Someone will know.

Second First Look

I’ve seen a few other trunks this month, but I’ve yet to see the Gourmet Trunk, so I was going into the first look totally blind.  So far so good!

The Information Cards

The Taste Trunk information cards include both information about the products in the box, as well as, recipes to use the products in.  Here’s what was included:

~Bone Doctors’ BBQ Original BBQ Sauce ($4.99): I was totally thinking that the name of this was a reference to making the flavor taste amazing to the bone or something along those lines.  However, the product (which contains only natural ingredients) was started by two orthopedic surgeons!  I never would have guessed that!

~the girl & the fig lavender sea salt ($3.75): I have never heard of lavender sea salt to be used in the kitchen (maybe as a bath product), but the card includes a recipe for some lavender blondies that sounds amazing!  I think L and I are going to give these a try this weekend.  We haven’t baked in ages and are totally overdue.

~The Jam Stand Drunken Monkey Jam ($10): OMG I was so excited to see this in my trunk!  B and I LOVE The Jam Stand stuff and I’ve gotten the Drunken Monkey Jam in a few boxes.  It’s amazing.  And I totally plan to replicate (okay have B replicate) the Jam Filled Buttermilk Pancakes this weekend.  Is it Saturday yet?

~Cucina & Amore Pesto Alla Siciliana Sun-Dried Tomato ($3.25): The Creamy Pasta with Chicken and Sun Dried Tomato Pesto recipe on the card is making my mouth water.  I don’t think B has ever made anything with a pesto like this, so I know he’ll be all up for experimenting with it.

~Iveta Gourmet Scone Mix – Apricot ($7.50): I’m not even sure I knew you could make scones from a mix? Not that I have ever really looked into it, but it just seemed like it’s a fancy bakery only kind of item?  This is another project for L and I!

~Two Snooty Chefs Kansas City Steak ($6.65): I love the name of this company!  I’m not sure about the bleu cheese burger recipe, but I’m guessing B would love it.  Either way, we’ll for sure find a use for this!

All totaled I came up with a value of $36.14 for the August Gourmet Taste Trunk! Trunks are $34.99/month ($29 + $5.99 shipping) $35/month, so the value is just slightly over the cost of the trunk!  But of course (as with all subscription boxes) you get the opportunity to try a bunch of products you may not have heard about otherwise, which I love!

What do you think of Taste Trunk?  Did you you get an August trunk?  Which one and what was in it?  If interested in subscribing or want to learn more, click here and enter coupon code “suburbanmom25″ to save 25% off your first trunk (it brings the cost of the trunk down to $27.74)!!!

This box looks like so much fun! I’m not a huge baker, but I’ve made scones from the mix they sell at World Market before. All you have to do is add water and everyone goes nuts over them. Hopefully yours will be just as yummy!

  2. BB

I received my first Taste Trunk box yesterday with identical items, except instead of BBQ sauce I received Susan’s Gourmet Salsa Relish. Happy camper! Thanks for the discount code on this one.

We would have loved this box in my house…everything in it. And this was the food box that I was thinking of getting a subscription to. Alas, my husband has requested that we try to “eat out of our cupboards” for the next couple of months since they are packed full of all sorts of brands/foods we’ve picked up here and there meaning to try. There really isn’t any room to put anything else #firstworldproblems

As for lavender brownies…I went to a lavender farm a few years ago and got some edible lavender which I used in a brownie recipe. Folks were really mixed on the flavor. Some equated it with soap since lavender is such a “bath” kind of smell for people. I’m curious how your lavender salt works. I think it would be a great touch (just a smidge) in some butter cookies.

I received the Gourmet Trunk as well yesterday. It’s my first “trunk.” Like BB, I did not get the BBQ sauce, but Susan’s Salsa Relish. I was thrilled by this box and although it’s a little pricey, I really enjoyed to products and am looking forward to trying each one!

I’ve got to admit that your lavender SALT has me stumped. I make lavender SUGAR which I use in my Holy Grail Fool-Proof Scones recipe and also in my shortbread. I have no idea what to do with lavender salt. Lavender seems like a “sweet” herb to me, KWIM?

As for scone mixes, yes, they work beautifully. I actually package my aforementioned scone recipe as gifts in a couple of different ways. I’ll either mix the dry ingredients in a bag so people can just add sour cream, or I fully prepare them to the pre-bake stage, cut them into triangles and freeze them. I then put them in a freezer safe gift box with baking instructions and a copy of the recipe. People can keep them in their freezer and just bake one or two at a time. It’s my most popular and most requested gift.

So, now that I’ve gotten all off topic on you, I just have to say that Taste Trunk looks awesome. I’ve seen reviews for 3 of the 4 themes this month and they all look fab. I’m adding this one to the top of my list.

    Cheers,
    Shauna

I received my “Sweets” Taste Trunk yesterday. I got a chocolate coconut cupcake mix, 2 packages of jelly candies (prickly pear and margarita), a peanut butter protein cookie, chocolate and almond caramels, and a jar of salted caramel sauce.

This is my first taste trunk and I am very happy with it. I love the packaging and the “old-timey” theme. The treats all look good and I can’t wait to try them–have to be careful though or I’ll gain 10 pounds with each box!
