I have no idea what got me thinking about this, but in my 17 years as a registered voter (I’ll let you do the math on this ;)), I have never once been called for jury duty. Never. Ever. And I am wondering if this is crazy or normal? I know some people have been called multiple times and I can’t help but wonder how they pick?
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t necessarily want to get picked for jury duty, but if I got called, I would happily serve my few days and be done with it. What I don’t want though, is to serve on a jury for weeks, months, whatever. I can’t help but wonder how people’s lives are affected if they are on a jury (like the Casey Anthony trial or whatever) for an extended period of time. That is not something I would ever be down for. Maybe that makes me a bad American? I’m not sure, but at least I’m honest!
So now I want to know, have you ever been called? How long did you serve? Did you love it? Hate it? Or were you just indifferent?
I’ve been called twice, my second time my number wasn’t pulled to report but my very first time I actually made it up for selection but was dismissed from the pool because I couldn’t be partial to the case they were trying, oh well.
Once I got out of it, the 2nd time I made it all the way to the courtroom but my number wasn’t called for the attorneys to question me (voir dire I think it’s called).
I was called three months after I registered to vote! I called in faithfully each week to see if I would need to report. The ONE day I was supposed to go my children were all sick and couldn’t find a babysitter so had to call in and talk to a mean judge!
Hubby is on call th next three months…hope he isn’t called in! ;/
I’ve never been called. Denny has though, and he had to go all the way to Detroit (not county level). Pretty sure it was a one or two day thing and his number was never pulled. This was at least 10-11 years ago. I have no idea what system they use to decide who to call.
I got called when I was 8 months pregnant, and the date that I would have had to have been there was a week after my due date. I wrote an email and got a sweet reply telling me congratulations and good luck, and not to worry about jury duty. My husband served on a murder case! He said it was a crazy experience but something he wouldn’t mind doing again.
My birthday is in December and when I turned 18 I got my first jury duty summons in January. Haven’t had one since though. *knock on wood*
I have been called every year since I turned 18 or 19, which is the minimum amount of time they have to wait for CA distinct courts. I usually get dismissed by phone but I get that summons every year. I think my drivers license and registration to vote threw me in the pile at age 18/19. It seems to be the norm here in CA to be summoned all the time but depending on the county, it usually means we call in by phone once or twice the day we are summoned and are dismissed. I have experienced just sitting in the waiting room for 4 hours at court house and then being dismissed. I have also postponed my service (for legit reasons) so many times that I hit the limit and had to call the clerk and beg to postpone again.
I was called twice when I was 18…once I got out of it for being in school, and the second time was summer so I called the phone line thingie every day but never had to actually go it.

I’ve been called 3 times. The first time, I was a standby telephone juror and I was dismissed b/c they didn’t need extra jurors. Got chosen as a juror (juror #5) the second time, but before the case came to trial, it was settled. The last time, I was questioned to be a potential juror, but wasn’t chosen and was dismissed. I am one of the few people that love jury duty! Especially here in NYC. You never know what you are going to get! I think I still have a few years before I can get picked again.
I’ve been called 3 times, once I actually had to go and made it as far as a court room but when they figured out that I was a college student and asked if I had any important papers/tests coming up, luckily finals were like a week away so I was let go! The other 2 times I was able to check the little box next to – Primary caregiver to a child under 5 – therefore I was excused!
Yes, once a couple of months ago. The case went over five days. It was really interesting to see the process but the accused came from the suburb next to mine – a little to close for comfort!
It was a drug arrest, 7 grams of cocaine. Anything over 3 grams is intent to supply under our law.
I got $100 a day plus travel and meal allowance.
I’ve never been called thankfully!
A few years ago two of my co-workers were called at exactly the same time – so they ‘served’ together – too funny
I had jury duty in the fall of 2011, and was selected for a murder trial. Selection took three days and then we went through one week of the trial before it was declared a mistrial. It was not an experience I would want to have again, that’s for sure!
i’ve been called twice in Pennsylvania since i moved to DC, so I never had to serve. Their records must be so out of date!
I have been called for jury duty three times. All three times I made it to the court room. The first time I served, it was a murder trial. I think I was picked because I was in sales and they figured if they could convince me and a few other people, we would persuade the rest. They were right. A few of us convinced the rest to see it our way. I actually hated the experience. It was so emotional and the responsibility was overwhelming. I still think about it and wonder if we did the right thing. The second and third time (today being the last time), I made it to the courtroom and was questioned by the attorneys. I was released for some reason and it bugs me. Maybe because I am retired right now? Don’t have a clue.
Very interesting! I would probably be relieved they didn’t pick me for a jury, but I’d also want to be why not!
