Button Letter Art – A DIY Project

Like I mentioned before, I was inspired by a friend of mine who posted her button art on Facebook to do my own. I had all the supplies because I was planning on doing W’s myself, but started and hated it, so I ended up buying one on Etsy. Anyways, as soon as I saw that someone else did it and did it well, I was re-inspired. I got my supplies out and went to work!

I'd say this took about an hour to finish.

I did the “L” first because I knew it would be way easier than the “W”. And it was. I used a ruler as a general guideline for the width of the L. When I tried to do it the first time, I spent forever looking for the perfect font, the perfect size, etc. Not this time! I just started glueing. And this time I wised up and layered the buttons so that you can’t really see too much white. Why didn’t I think of this the first time? Duh.

This one probably took an hour and a half. And it looks worse. Go figure!

I did the “W” a few days after the L. I really don’t have hours and hours in a row to just sit around and craft. The W was much harder. Again I used a ruler and just kind of went from there. I’ll be the first to admit, it could look better. If you think it looks like crap, go have a few drinks and come back. It will look PERFECT .

Just to answer a few questions you may (or may not) have:

How did you attach the buttons? I used a hot glue gun. In person you can see the strings from the glue. Next time I would use something else. Like something the nice ladies at the craft store recommend.
Where did you get the buttons? Basically everywhere. I ordered some from Etsy. Bought some from Michaels and JoAnn Fabric. And got some from my Grandma’s button collection. I picked a color scheme (which matches W’s room since that is what I originally got the buttons for) and just bought different sized buttons in those colors.
What did you put the buttons on?  An 11×14 canvas.
Exactly what supplies did you use for this?  An 11×14 canvas, a million buttons (how many you need depends on what letter you are making, the size of the buttons, etc), glue gun, glue sticks, a pencil and a ruler.  Next time I would probably also have a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser handy so that I could erase my pencil marks better!
Where are you going to put these?  I am planning on putting them in the play area in the basement or in the playroom.
How much did this cost to complete?  Hmm, probably $20-$30?  I still have a bunch of left over buttons too. Looks like I need to have another boy.  I will name him something that starts with an east letter.  Like an “I”??
